❓ Frequently Asked Questions – Tip Calculator
How much should I tip at a restaurant?
In the US, the standard tip at a sit-down restaurant is 15–20% of the pre-tax bill. For exceptional service, 20–25% is appropriate. For average service, 15% is the minimum. For poor service, 10% is acceptable but you can speak to the manager instead of withholding the tip entirely, as servers often depend on tips as their primary income.
How do I calculate a 20% tip quickly in my head?
To calculate 20% mentally: first find 10% by moving the decimal point one place left (e.g. $85 → $8.50), then double it ($8.50 × 2 = $17). So a 20% tip on an $85 bill is $17. For 15%, find 10% ($8.50) then add half of that ($4.25) to get $12.75.
How do I split a bill evenly between friends?
Enter the bill amount, select your tip percentage, then use the Number of People stepper to set how many people are sharing the bill. The calculator automatically divides the total (bill + tip + tax) equally and shows each person's exact share. Individual person cards are shown when there are 2 or more people.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Tipping etiquette suggests tipping on the pre-tax bill amount, as the tax is not part of the service you received. However, many people tip on the total post-tax amount out of convenience, which results in a slightly higher tip. This calculator lets you enter the tax rate separately so you can choose either approach.
What does the service rating feature do?
The star rating feature suggests an appropriate tip percentage based on service quality: 1 star (poor) suggests 5%, 2 stars (below average) suggests 10%, 3 stars (average) suggests 15%, 4 stars (good) suggests 18%, and 5 stars (excellent) suggests 20%. Clicking a star automatically updates the tip percentage field.
What is the tip comparison table?
The comparison table shows the tip amount, total bill and per person cost for multiple tip percentages (5%, 10%, 15%, 18%, 20%, 25%, 30%) all at once — with your chosen percentage highlighted. This makes it easy to see the difference between tip levels and decide what feels right for the service you received.
